caution, when everyone plays the motivational speaker
Reading Time: 3 minutes

CAUTION, WHEN EVERYONE PLAYS THE MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER.

Why do you want to play the motivational speaker when your story is centred around a lack of determination, frustration, and depression? Why exactly do you feel the need to tell us your story and deceive the gullible ones when you barely have experience on the subject. Wait, Let’s start from the very beginning.

Motivational speaking is the act of making speeches intended to motivate or inspire an audience. A motivational speaker tries to challenge or transform his audience.

Ikedi was my friend and he comes from a Low-class home. You must be asking yourself why I used the verb ‘was.’ Yes, I unfriended him. I couldn’t put up with his excesses anymore. Ikedi’s family earned to feed. His father is a vulcanizer who prayed for deflated tyres before he feeds his family and his mother, makes Akara in front of their house; yes, house. Stella once told me that there is a difference between ‘home’ and ‘house,’ you can ask me later in the comment box.

‘Tobe, go and follow me on Instagram,’ Ikedi said after getting a new iPhone.

‘Wow, you are now on Instagram? Okay, I will follow you. What is your handle?’

‘derealmoney_ike’

‘Sorry what? The ‘real-money’? Ikedi, where is the money?’

That was how Ikedi joined Instagram and before one year, he had over 20k followers. Ikedi lived a fake life. Everything about him was fake, but that wasn’t my problem. My problem was that he saw the need to motivate others. He made posts with captions like;

‘Never let anyone tell you that you can’t make it in life, see where I am today. From zero to hero.’

‘I sleep in money and wake up in money, blessings of life struggles.’

‘I come from the streets and now, here I am. Never say never, you can make it in life, never quit on your hustle, Oluwa dey your side.’

Motivational Speaker? Nonsense.

Many of us are Ikedis and millions of us are his 20k followers. We feel the need to inspire others, even when we have not inspired ourselves. We see the need to tell others to chase their dreams while our dreams are asleep. We pick a colour and its red, then we want to make it yellowish-red.

Do not measure yourself by the standard of others. Live your life off the pressure from social media, live for yourself and your family, and not to impress your followers. Ikedi does not even have a pin yet he claims to sleep in money. He wears designers that he spends his entire hustle on and treks to a very fine building down the road to take pictures. To what end? You might be better than him but you feel the need to be him because he has brainwashed you with mere photos. No wonder a friend of mine, Emmanuel Okonkwo, quoted ‘Photos don’t tell the full story’.

The greatest motivation that you can get is the one you give to yourself. We are not saying you shouldn’t listen to or learn from reputable speakers/mentors, but not every tom and dick are mentors, and for your sake, don’t lose touch with reality. caution, when everyone plays the motivational speaker.

Why do I feel like I am sounding like a motivational speaker now? Lmao…. I rest my case. (By the way, my friend’s name is not Ikedi).

  1. I think people like to motivate others when they don’t even have their own life together…….anyway people will keep leaving fake life because of social media but the earlier people learn to be their true self the better for them

  2. “While our dreams slept” so apt. Precious time wasted faking it for a bunch of followers that will forget all about you with the next status with better picture quality.
Well done bro, great piece as always.

  3. One of the main issues we have these days….people tend to live their lives inorder to please others..pick a thing or two from the motivational speakers but don’t lose yourself trying to be like them or live their lives..

  4. It’s the world we live today, everyone trying to be voice and a force to be reckoned with.

  5. Lmao 🤣
This is so true, i just hope people get to motivate themselves better than motivating other people’s dream while yours is in a shambolic state… And i feel most people are concerned of what others think about them than what they themselves think of themselves which isn’t supposed to be, we should learn to focus more on ourselves and let other people’s thoughts about us mean less to us than trying to live up to peoples expectations… i rest my case, and i hope I’m not sounding like a motivational speaker also 😂 😂… All is well 🙏

    • Very true Kayode. A lot of us seem to be living in the shadows of others lately. Thank you for your contribution.
