Google has revealed its new SEO ranking method for 2021. What does this mean for your website, content and copywriting? Must you hire an expert copywriter and a UI UX web designer ? Read on to find out what choices you can make.
Page Experience as a ranking factor for Google SEO
According to Search Engine Land, Google in late 2020, has announced a new “Google Search” ranking algorithm designed to consider “Page Experience” as a condition for ranking web pages. “Page experience” simply refers to how web users perceive the experience of interacting with web pages. This implies that if Google detects that web users don’t have a smooth web page interaction, then, Google will not rank such websites high in search results.
Google has equally listed some conditions for analysing a website page experience. They include page loading speed, interactivity, and the stability of content as it loads. Google calls these conditions “Core Web Vitals.” Also, Google is using some existing signals, including mobile-friendliness, safe-browsing, HTTPS, and intrusive ads as other conditions in their ranking judgement. All of these combined, make up the Google conditions for a “page experience.”
By the way, have you ever accidentally clicked a wrong link due to an unstable/jumping content on a web page? That’s what Google Search considers as a bad user experience.
Relevant Content Writing and copywriting as a ranking factor for Google SEO
It’s important to note, that page experience isn’t the only thing that matters when it comes to ranking. Google states that great content will still rank highly in Google Search, despite a poor page experience.
“While all of the components of page experience are important, we will rank pages with the best information overall, even if some aspects of page experience are subpar. A good page experience doesn’t override having great, relevant content. However, in cases where multiple pages have similar content, page experience becomes the distinguishing factor in Search,” Google states.
Based on Google’s announcement, the company has given a six-month notice before they go live in launching this new ranking algorithm sometime in 2021. This is a wakeup call for all website owners, website designers, content and copy writers.
Timeline for implementation of UI UX and Content Copywriting for Google search
Google has also announced in a post on the Google Webmaster Central Blog, that the page experience signals they’ll be using to determine Google Search rankings will roll out in May 2021. The changes for non-AMP web content to become eligible to appear in the Top Stories feature in Search for mobile devices will also roll out in May 2021.
Google says that any page that meets the Google News content policies will be eligible, but Google Search will prioritise showing pages with “great page experience”, regardless of whether or not they’re implemented with AMP or not.
On a final note, Google is planning to test a visual indicator that identifies pages that “have met all of the page experience criteria.” If this test is successful, Google will show this visual indicator for search results in May 2021.
Interestingly, Google has recommended that publishers get ready for the new changes by conducting a site-wide audit of pages using the Google Search Console’s report for Core Web Vitals followed by using Page Speed Insights and Lighthouse to fix web page issues.
